There will be a lot of news about the upcoming total solar eclipse this year and the Regina Centre is getting prepared.  Some of our members have made their own travel arrangements to view the eclipse from either Wyoming or Idaho.  If you are wanting to be in the path of totality, just know that there are no hotel rooms left along the eclipse path from Oregon to Nebraska.  However, if you would still like to see the partial solar eclipse that will be visible all over North America, you are welcome to look through our telescopes which will be set up at the Saskatchewan Science Centre for pub

This month we have a presentation about the Great American Solar Eclipse which is coming up on August 21st.  This is a very big event in the world of astronomy so it will be all over the news.  Vance will provide some information for travelers, imagers and volunteers.

This month we have a presentation about geology advances within our solar system from guest speaker Jason Cosford.  Jason is the president of the Saskatchewan Geological Society and has a keen interest in astronomy.

This month we have a presentation named Easy Astrophotography by Shane Ludtke.  Shane is a member of the Regina astronomy club who has recently devoted some time to learning how to take simple photos of the night sky. You will learn how to take some stunning photos with little effort and modest gear.

This month we have a webinar entitled "Music to Einstein's Ears:  The Discovery of Gravitational Waves" by Heather Fong.  Heather Fong is a doctoral student at the Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Toronto.  The detection of gravitational waves is an amazing feat of engineering so come join us and learn about this whole new way to observe the universe.

Guest speaker Les Dickson will present on the history of the Saskatchewan Summer Star Party. The star party is an annual event in the Cypress Hills Interprovincial park. Amateur astronomers from over North America spend the weekend observing. Cypress Hills is a unqiue location that provides great astronomical observing conditions.

We will be setting up telescopes during the day for solar observing as well as evening observing. Stop by for a look. Here are the details:

Solar Observing

10:00am - 4:00pm at the Royal Saskatchewan Museum (2445 Albert Street)

Special filters will be used to safely observe sunspots and other features on the closest star to Earth, the Sun.

Night Time Observing

7:30pm - 10:00pm in front of the IMAX Theatre (2903 Powerhouse Drive)

Come and see a rare astronomy event! We will be able to observe Mercury pass in front of the Sun. We can observe Mercury transit the Sun 14 times during the next century. Telescopes will be setup by the entrance to the IMAX theatre. Special filters are used to safely view the Sun. Stop by for a view! This event will end at 12:38pm.
